![]() I found some stuff through google and realized that this is a pretty common problem and that made me feel a bit better. The micro switches really weren't snug enough for 4-way mode and down didn't even work at all. It was easy enough to do, but the performance was horrible. Also, I opened up the back and switched it to 4-way mode. I don't play any fighting games, maybe its made more for that. The throw on the stock joystick is huge and the actual joystick is pretty large and clunky too. I got the X Arcade solo the other day and I have to say that I'm glad I had already placed the order for the Mag Stik Plus. OK, I will see if I need to extend the wires, seems easy enough. You may want to wait it out and just practice your game until prices get better. ![]() They do move a bit, so you have to decide if you would be comfortable with a smaller unit. Those are similar to the Hori arcade sticks, which seem to start around $100-$150 for the basic models, which you also can't pick up used for a reasonable price right now. Again, you can't get anything near that price now. I think there were previous non-"tournament" editions for closer to $50 without the nice Sanwa controller, but if you were going to replace that anyway, it seems like it would be a good option. They list at $150, but they're going for $300-$400 now. The prices are sky-high, because they ran out of stock during the Street Fighter IV launch. There are a lot of fight sticks out there these days. If it could do 4-way mode out-of-the-box, I would already own it, but I have to factor in the extra cost to upgrade. ![]() If they go to clearance (or if I get some Fry's gift cards for my birthday) I will be all over that. My local Fry's has it marked down to $119. The X-Arcade dual is "only" $30 more than the solo. Otherwise it looks like a nice setup for $100. If someone owns it, maybe they can mention its limitations. I'm not sure if this is the case, but I know on my keyboard if I hold down a key that can block further input until I release it. There's the Hotrod, but I think that uses a keyboard emulator, so there may be issues with pressing too many signals simultaneously. Also, I had to put new connectors on the wires because the microswitch connectors on each of the joysticks were different sizes. As you can see I drilled new holes since they didn't line up with the X-Arcade joystick. The Mag-Stik Plus has the advantage of being able to switch back and forth from 8-way to 4-way from the top of the control panel. Did you replace the entire joystick with the Mag Stik Plus or just the handle? Replacing just the handle sounds easy enough, but if you replaced the entire joystick, was that difficult to do? I don't think I was clear with my question, and I apologize that I don't know too much about custom joysticks. Remove the bat-top stick and put in the ball-top stick. ![]() There's a nut on the bottom of the joystick that you take off. Unfortunately, you can't just order the joystick with a ball top. Again, this would only be for Donkey Kong. If there is a company that would build me a custom one, like an NES Advantage setup, but with true arcade controls and no lag, I would be interested in that. The problem I am seeing is that some people think they only way to eliminate lag completely is to build your own/custom stick like an Ultimarc. I know some people build their own, but I would rather avoid that if possible. I have seen a lot written about the X-Arcade and some seem to like it, but I also see a lot of people complaining that there is lag. As a point of reference, my high score in DK is 300K. Honestly, I am still unsure about it and confused in general. I always loved that controller and initially thought it was working great, but after playing a few games on the keyboard recently and doing some reading, I am worried it could be lagging and costing me points/men. I currently use my 18 year old NES Advantage with a retro converter to USB. I would also like to stick with the joystick-type controller and one that would be most similar to playing on the original arcade cabinet. ![]() I am not building a cabinet, just playing on my couch with the controller on my lap. I would appreciate any opinions on what would be your ultimate MAME controller for playing Donkey Kong. ![]()
